I moved house last weekend but i'm going to be out of the country for most (but not all) of the next six months so it doesn't make much sense to pay for an internet connection that I won't use. Several neighbours have said they're happy to let me piggyback on their broadband via Wi-Fi when i'm back in the UK, but all are just beyond the limits of a usable signal so laptop use is currently limited to particular window-ledge upstairs. However, my 15" PowerBook has a card slot. Can anyone recommend an OSX compatible card that I can plug an external antenna (aka pringle can contraption) into to improve signal reception.

There's at least one company that does an external antenna kit that will work with your internal wireless card. It requires that you drill a hole in your PowerBook case though, which you might not want to do.

These people seem to have all sorts of interesting gizmos: <http://www.macwireless.com/index.php>.
