Is VPN buggy under Mac OS X

I'm using the built in PPTP VPN client accessed via the "Internet
Connect" application. When I connect the VPN most things go down the
encrypted tunnel instead of leaving my machine in the clear. However,
some connections (eg. Mail) seem to ignore the VPN!
The whole point of using VPN, from my point of view, was to ensure that
nothing of mine can be sniffed locally (eg. on an open wi-fi network,
cybercafe LAN, etc).
Am I doing something wrong, is the VPN implementation buggy, or are
these leaks the fault of individual buggy applications ignoring the VPN?
Is there a way to force everything to use the VPN interface and NOT go
out through a non-encrypted interface?
I'd really like to get to the bottom of this. Can anyone help?
