Can anyone tell me what types of encryption these sort of wi-fi printers
support? I use WPA2 (a.k.a. AES) encryption on my network with a
randomly generated 256-bit key and I wouldn't want to have to use
something as insecure as WEP just to be able to print.

According to the set-up guide - the Brother supports WEP &
WPA-PSK(TKIP) - WPA-PSK(AES) is NOT supported

Shame. In that case, I think I'd just get an AirPort Express, locate it
somewhere convenient, and connect the printer via USB. No point in
reducing security just for the sake of printing wirelessly. After all,
it's only the laptop that needs to be truly mobile, not the printer.

I use WEP with the 10 digit password - good enough for me.

Err... I hope you are aware that there are freely available programs
that can crack WEP in a matter of minutes. Anyone could use your network
for nefarious purposes that would then get tracked back to you, or read
your email, or log your web browsing habits. Depending on how you've set
things up they might even be able to access your disc contents, or use
"man in the middle" methods to phish even more information from you. I
think WEP should be banned because it's worse than insecure; it gives
the unwary the *illusion* of security.

The WPA-PSK(TKIP) encryption uses 7-63 characters - according the set-up
guide.

You should use TKIP for sure. At least it has a fair chance of being
secure. Remember to use a long and random password though because TKIP
is vulnerable to an off-line dictionary attack, again with freely
available tools.
