Sims 2 won't run-display problems too

I was having some problems with my hard drive and after a reinstall I can
only get a resolution of 1280X1024 pixels with no options and only millions
of colours.
My kids are very keen on the Sims 2 and it crashes each time on start-up.
Occasionally when rebooting we get a fuzzy black and white screen which is
usually cured by a restart.
Any idea what the problem is and how I can fix it?
Everything else seems to work OK.
I am running 10.4.6
