I too have recently downloaded it and agree with you. I immediately
thought of it as a replacement for iPhoto, albeit probably an expensive
one. According to someone in one of the Adobe Forums (I guess an Adobe
employee from the number of posts and knowledge of the product) "it
probably won't cost any more than Aperture".
I set it up to reference my iPhoto library and it seems to share those
files quite happily without duplicating them. On the other hand though,
any new photos that import via Lightroom get added to the Lightroom
folder not the iPhoto folders. I haven't looked into it yet, but I guess
you'd have to keep importing the photos via iPhoto and then reference
them from Lightroom.
If it really doesn't cost any more than Aperture is today then I'd
certainly buy it and chuck iPhoto out.
