Academic. If you have any sense you'll shove the memory card in
a USB2 reader anyway.

Assuming you have a new Mac that supports USB2, and not a 3-year-old
fossil like mine that doesn't.

USB 2 devices usually work on USB 1.1 ports anyway, just a little
slower..

They do - but then there's no point doing it that way rather than just
attaching the camera.

The memory card cover tends to be a hinged cover that is strong, the usb
port tends to be a bit of crappy rubber. I've seen plenty of broken and
missing rubber port covers, but very few broken card covers.

Depending of course on the cover.

Yeah, but I can't recall seeing any I've been overly impressed with.
Some have been bloody awful.

Also if you've got several cameras pick right and you can have them all
using the same type of card so only one reader [1], but chances of
getting them all using the same cable are slim [2].

Although if your two cameras use a different card but the same cable
(and the same cable as your mums camera), that doesn't apply.

No but most readers nowadays support all the formats under the sun.

My other reason for preferring a card reader is I know how easy it is to
catch a dangling cable, camera plugged into computer, camera on desk,
cable hanging off the side.....

Haven't done that.

Neither have I but I've seen the risk, I'd imagine this could be more of
an issue with a little 'un wandering around the house.

There are pros and cons of each way, although I don't believe that using
the cable on a camera proves you have no sense!

Course not, and I don't think anyone said that, oh they did, but it
wasn't me. I do use the cable occasionally, like the past week when I
couldn't find my card reader [1], or on works camera. But most people
into their photography prefer the card reader method, possibly due to
the battery & multiple card stuff.

[1] Why it was in one of my coats inside pockets I don't know which is
why it took longer to find than usual as thats not somewhere I'd
normally put it.
