OK before you all start, I know it's Alt-3, but this doesn't seem to
work in Chicken of the VNC.

The server (Windows XP) ends up seen a plain old 3.

What am I doing wrong? (Besides using XP...)

Also, while we're on the same subject, I'm on a local 100Mbps network
and the screen update rate is sometimes pathetically slow, often
leaving detritus around the place. (Mac, PC and switch support 100Mbps,
and the Mac and PC are the only devices on the network). The PC server
side is from www.realvnc.com, currently using free edition 4.1.1

How would I know which side of the connection is playing up?

They aren't, the lan just can't keep up with the video rate if using
millions of colours etc.

I'm assuming it doesn't send the whole screen for every update - just the
bits which change, right? I can't believe a 100 base LAN isn't quick
enough......??

On TB2 you can watch the screen gradually refresh down the page when its
running really slowly, people who've got 5second desktops, magnifying
pop up docks etc are all great. Fortunately one of the updates to TB2
allowed you to turn desktops off.

One way if you are controlling a PC is actually use Remote Desktop
Connection from MS themselves, it is actually rather bloody good, allows
you to reduce the number of colours to 256 (which makes things a damn
sight easier) as well as allowing you to reduce the screen resolution.
Nobody can sit watching the mouse etc being moved around though which
may or may not be a bid thing depending on your use...

Hmmm. First, 256 colours is appalling! How did we ever cope?! I think it's
better than VNC, however I'm using Visual Studio and the editor window has
an annoying habit of refreshing every 2 or 3 seconds. Reminds me of the days
about 10 years ago when processors and graphics cards weren't quick enough
to give us a flicker-free experience!

I'm not sure which one I like better....

well i've pretty much resorted to using 256 colours all the time, bad as
it may be, it makes it useable over a net connection otherwise you have
to use B&W which is bloody awful, but I now use TB2 for mac remote, and
RDC for the PC
