Hi,
Futher to an iChat sesh with Daniele, I have a problemo. I have a G4
Sawtooth 400 that was gifted to me because it was freezing inexplicably.
To colour that, it freezes on all the time and quite reliably on certain
processes, but the freezes are not dependent on what is running in the
foreground. Finder freezes, Garageband freezes. The freezes are a total
lock-up cursor, keyboard, audio stutter, the lot.
So far I have replaced the CPU daughterboard with one from an identical
G4 Sawtooth that a friend has (not his machine works and mine still
doesn't), removed an Adaptec SCSI card that was doing nothing, and now I
am thinking about progressively removing RAM chips. Is this a good
approach? I guess if the RAM is okay, then it's likely to be the bloody
motherboard or possibly the AGP card.
The ram is the first thing I would go for. I had a sawtooth that used to
have freezing problems until I found a ram chip it didn't like.
Thanks guys. The last time I had to piss about with the guts of a Mac
was in 68030 days, and back then RAM was a problem because you had to
fill the RAM up from the slot closest to the processor and have the
biggest chips in those locations. I recall that this went out with the
Dark Ages. Can I just do willy-nilly stuff with the DIMMS in the
Sawtooth?
Hate to chase for an answer, but does anyone have ram swapping
experience with G4-onwards towers? Can i leave empty slots willy-nilly
anywhere on the board?
Cheers,
Nige.
