I wouldn't have thought overheating was your problem. If you are
running low on disk space (which I think you indicated) then that may
be causing problems.

You may have a hard disk drive problem. If you can boot off the Mac OS
X installation disk you can run Disk Utility (there is a menu item for
this when the installation program starts) and check your drive. If it
is a repairable problem this may do it.

Other things to try are the standard responses to an uncooperative Mac.

1. Zap the PRAM. With the Mac off, hold down the Cmd, opt, p and r keys
and then press and release the power switch (you may find a third hand
useful for this). Keep the four keys pressed until you hear the
start-up chime twice (you don't see anything on screen). Then let go of
all keys and see if it boots.

2. Reset the Power Manager (unlikely to be the issue but worth a try).
With the computer off, press the ctl, opt, shift and power keys and
then release them. You don't see or hear anything.

3. See if it boots into Open Firmware. Hold down the cmd, opt, o and f
keys and press the power switch. It should come up with a grey screen
and a command prompt. Type 'reset-all' without the quotes and hit
Return - this is more or less equivalent to 1. above. Your Mac should
reboot (at least as far as it does now.

If it is a disk problem I can recommend Disk Warrior (from Alsoft)
without reservation. It helped me get all of the data off my hard disk
when it failed earlier this week.

Another thing worth considering is perhaps a problem with a peripheral.
Detach any third-party mice, keyboards (obviously replacing them with
the originals if you have them), scanners, tablets, printers, etc. Then
try booting again.

As Jon said, more details would be helpful. What model Mac? What
version OS? The more information the better.
