Do donations for software work?
I read here:
http://wincent.com/a/products/winswitch/
that this author has only had one donation per thousand downloads. Do
you reckon this is typical?
Have *you* donated to any software? I mean a real donation, not a "you
really should register this software" - I'm talking about free-to-use
software with no restrictions, just a request for donations.
I've donated to a couple. I like the idea a lot more than 'required'
registrations, even if they're only $5 or whatever.

A couple here too, where the software hasn't just been useful, but I
have been thoroughly grateful that someone has put it out. (Barkman,
Finderpop in the old days, plus I will now - thanks for the prod -
donate to Liyanage)
I've spent more and more often on shareware.
I do get deeply annoyed by nagging shareware. In fact, I think the only
thing that could remotely be classed as nagging (and it is remote, I
think) that I have paid for is Graphic Convertor. In my experience, the
more annoying the nag, the less useful/elegant/well produced the
shareware. And the less likely I am to pay.
I like the idea of a donation basis, but cynically suspect it gets a
lower response than even shareware. I would *love* to be proved wrong.
