Re: Never seen Apple RAM cheaper than Crucial

Pricing up a Mini for my parents. Apple want £70 to go from 512MB to 1GB (I
assume that's just adding another 512MB module?) Thinking that I could always
add another 512/1GB later, I had a butcher's at Crucial. They want £90 for
512MB.

When I bought my PMG5, Apple wanted £300 for 2GB. I paid half that at
Crucial. They're (Crucial) now asking just over £100 for 2GB PM RAM. I don't
think that's a bad price at all.

I know there was some discussion here when they were first released, but I
STILL don't understand why the Duo is still so much more than the highest end
G4 ever was. Are the CPUs really that much more expensive? I can't see it's
anything to do with the RAM.

I also wish I could order it without the OS as I have two Tiger licences. I'd
also like the option to order a keyboard, but not a mouse, as they already
have an MX510 which they love.

One last thing, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the G4s have
a dedicated graphics card with its own RAM? You're almost forced to upgrade
the RAM as the graphics chip eats so much! And if it's anything like the
Intel integrated graphics I've seen on some PeeCees, then it's almost
guaranteed to be ***, anyway. Didn't the G4s use ATi?

P.S. Just for argument's sake, if I do leave it at 512 (they'll just be using
it for standard office stuff, email, Internet, etc. I can't see them wanting
to bother with iLife, or Front Row, too much) and then decide to add more
later, how easy is it to upgrade these beasts? I assume it's a putty knife
job? Are they any different from the G4s?

The Mini only allows a single stick of memory.

You are unlikely to have any problems with Kingston memory.

There's no reason to believe that, because you have a Mac, you need to
pay more for your memory than a PC user.
