Hmm...

What version of Windows? XP with SP2?

I *did* have Mapsource running with Win98, VPC5 and a USB-serial adaptor
on my old eMap...

The Garmin GPSMap 60cx is USB only as far as I can tell so there's no need
for a serial-USB converter. Install VPC & Windows, install MapsSource, plug
in the GPS and that should be that.

That's what I thought, but it didn't work for me...

<time passes>

OK, XP Pro, patched up to *now*, Mapsource 6.9.1, USB Driver version
grnmusb.sys:2.1.0.0, XP sees a "Garmin GPS", but MapSource doesn't.

G4 PowerBook, no other external USB devices.

Lend me your goat, please.

My setup is currently as follows:

15" AlBook
Mac OS X 10.4.5
VPC 6.1.1
Windows 2000 Professional SP4 + all hotfixes
MapSource 6.9.1
Garmin USB Driver grmnusb.sys 2.1.0.0 (MapSource>Help>About MapSource...)

It doesn't seem to matter whether I start MapSource before or after plugging
in the GPS. VPC and Windows both complain if I shut down the VM with it
plugged in but it works anyway. The VM has 192MB of RAM allocated to it. It
also doesn't seem to matter if the GPS is plugged in when it's on or off.

The GPS shows in Device Manager as a new top level item called 'GARMIN
Devices' with a generic device icon, the GPS item itself shows as 'Garmin USB
GPS'. It doesn't show under USB Serial Bus Controllers. If I right-click and
show driver properties, then Driver, then Driver Details there are two
entries, one's grmngen.sys v 2.1.0.0, the other is grmnusb.sys v 2.1 (not
exactly the same as MapSource shows).

From MapSource: Utilities>Get Unit ID... and boom! There it is. I think I
remember having to click on the drop-down menu and Find Device the first
time.

That's all I can think of for now, apart from Chris Ridd mentioned that VPC 7
might bugger up USB.
