Re: Recommendations for anti-virus and firewall for Apple Mac

What AV and Firewall software would people recommend for use on an Apple Mac
running MacOS 10? On Windows I'd probably opt for either Norton Internet
Security or else (taking the free route) AVG and ZoneAlarm. What are the
equivalent packages (purchased and free) that people would recommend for the
Mac?

When I was setting up a customer's Mac for broadband, I noticed that he
didn't seem to have any AV/FW protection, and as he's connecting by USB
modem rather than router, he doesn't get the FW protection of NAT :-(

Just to follow up on what the others have said, I use the built-in
firewall myself (I found that some of the fancy GUI packages can cause
more problems than they cure), OSX uses the standard Unix ipfw firewall
software anyway, so it's powerful enough.

Then ClamXav for anti-virus. I was using Intego Virus Barrier, but for
the protection you need it was starting to look expensive on updates.
ClamXav works well, is low on processor use, and is free. Also
clarifying some of the arguments in other parts of this thread, it can
be set to automatically update the definitions file (daily if you want),
along with automatic checking of your files. Personally I ran a full
system check after installing it, then just use the individual folder
Sentry to monitor my normal downloadable files (email, Internet
downloads, Chat etc.).

Because Clam is free and uses little system power, it makes it a good
choice for the least wasted cost and effort.
