What AV and Firewall software would people recommend for use on an
Apple Mac running MacOS 10? On Windows I'd probably opt for either
Norton Internet Security or else (taking the free route) AVG and
ZoneAlarm. What are the equivalent packages (purchased and free)
that people would recommend for the Mac?

When I was setting up a customer's Mac for broadband, I noticed that
he didn't seem to have any AV/FW protection, and as he's connecting
by USB modem rather than router, he doesn't get the FW protection of
NAT :-(

I'm told http://www.clamxav.com is a good anti virus utility, though I
don't feel a need for it myself at the moment. As for firewalls, as
other replies have mentioned, use the built in one.

Is the built-in firewall enabled by default? I'm a bit of a novice on Macs,
having cut my teeth on Windows, so I wouldn't know how to tell whether the
firewall is enabled on a given connection or how to enable it if it wasn't.
When I looked in Internet Connections (purple circular icon on pop-up
toolbar at right of screen) I found two entries, one for the dial-up
connection and one for an Ethernet port which was actually the ADSL USB
modem in disguise. I couldn't see anything there about firewalls. I also
clicked on the "<...>" icon in the toolbar at the top of the screen (the one
which changes between grey dots and black dots depending on whether an
internet connection exists - very subtle!) and didn't see anything there
about firewalls either. Was I looking in the right place?
