So what's the thinking? Is the Core Solo enough for a basic DVD/iTunes
media centre or should I go for the Core duo option? Is the duo likely
to be noisier?

I'm thinking about going for just the base model. I'm not thinking
about this as a computer, just as a media machine. As such, stonking
CPU power isn't necessary. So long as it can play back HD though,
that's a thought.

i'm thinking the 1.5 Core Solo will manage HD ok as long as there's not
much else going on. Do we know UK pricing yet? £349 would get one

It should cope with 720p OK, because a 1.67GHz G4 can do. But that speed G4
can't handle 1080i, so I'd be doubtful the 1.5 Core Solo could either.

So it depends on what we mean by HD. Cue Elliott...

I wish I could say. 720p 25 will be enough if that is all I can get.
We wait to see what Sky and Freeview will offer when they emerge from
their cocoons.
I bet they might go for 1080i, which is a painful thing to think about
on a computer. Previously, there had been mumblings that 720p25 would
be some kind of European standard.
This newfangled stuff is likely to be more tolerant with up and down
res-ing than the NTSC 60 field with 3:2 pulldown v PAL's 50 field 4%
speed-up of movies.

The dual core version looks like it is good enough to render iPod
movies pretty quickly. 5 X (My PB G4) is still pretty glacial, but 5 X
is welcome.

Wireless keyboard and mouse and a ***-off DLP projector throwing a
1920*1200 pixel image on the wall 10m away is couch-potato city!

Oh, my aching credit card!
