I'll put my hand up here. Mains cable enters my house twelve feet
above the ground. I once lost an external modem to a lightning strike,
which also destroyed the power supply of the IIci to which it was
connected, while leaving the rest of the computer undamaged. The only
explanation I can see for that is that the lightning struck both the
mains and telephone cables simultaneously (the two cables do cross each
other about 300 yards from the house).

They use the same pole here....
