[Ping macbook owners] Heat & idle temps

Anyone with a macbook know if it's got some sort of nice regulation
feature for the heat? Does it go very quiet, and idle (ie very low cpu
usage) when it's not doing anything, but not sleeping?
Only reason I'm asking is that my 1.8ghz laptop used to get rather noisy
when you started playing games (and also warm, for obvious reasons) - but
wouldn't quiet down very much when idling. I had to use something called
speedswitchXP to get it to idle the processor at a much lower speed in
order to shut the fans up.
Does OSX have something like this as part of it, or is there a utility
that can do this?
Oh, and another question, anyone with an intel mac got Corel Painter IX -
does it work, or is it broken?
