I've fixed a number of monitors by tweaking the power output of the transformer, therefore increasing the brightness of the screen. This works to a degree and can help prolong the life of a monitor, but the fact this is necessary points to the lifespan of the monitor being a little shorter than you might want.
If you leave it as it is, it may reach a particular level and not get any worse, or it may continue getting darker until it's unusable and you have to hook in a external monitor...
You can usually tweak the focus as well if necessary - the controls are next to each other on a lot of monitors.
*SERIOUS NOTE: I don't recommend doing this yourself - I'm a qualified electronics engineer, so I'm certified to blow myself up. But seriously, there's tens of thousands of volts in there driving that CRT screen, so you don't wanna mess with it!*
If you can find a decent TV engineer in your area, you may be able to persuade them to take a look, tho I don't know what they'd charge. Or if you're in my area (near Bournemouth, Dorset), I'll consider doing it for some beer money.
