Anyone know what causes the spinning color wheel???

Now I can't open jpgs, just get the color wheel, get a message that
Preview will not quit and have to shut down with the off switch...the
wheel just keeps turning.

I have been going thru hundreds of jpgs to clean out duplicates,
etc.... over the past few days with no problem. Now this happens.

Ideas as to what is the cause? Not enough RAM? Help!!
