5th Gen iPod 'Hmmm'ness

Ok, so I now have a 30GB white 5th gen iPod. As I have a G4 tower I've
also bought a 4 port USB2 PCI card (Belkin).
The G4 is seeing the card fine. The iPod mounts fine, charges fine etc.
However...and you knew there'd be a 'however'...there's two small flies
in the pizza: (1) the machine now takes a long time to go into full
sleep if the iPod is connnected (whether mounted or not). Normally it
takes about 5 seconds to go into sleep, now it's taking upwards of a
minute, maybe even three. This isn't too bad, but (2) when it wakes up
you get the 'a device was removed incorrectly and any files on it are
now in Alaska'-type message.
Given that the iPod doesn't charge when the machine sleeps (another
downside compared to Firewire) it won't be too bad if I just unmount and
disconnect the thing, but this just doesn't sound normal.
I assume that it's the USB2 card that's the culprit and that another
(different branded) card may (or may not) cure this.
Thoughts?
