Now you are starting to see the benefits of FCP's batch capture.
With that, you save only the project and the non-video assets like
stills. That normally fits with ease on a single CD. The video stays on
the original tape.

In the short term the quick way is to start a collection of removable
firewire drives. $60 per REV cartridge and another $400 for a drive is
silly money. You can buy drives for 1/4 of that cost per GB.

It is a royal pain to recover the video assets from a DVD.
