Am I wrong about this but 50mm on a CCD camera sounds rather long to me,
while 30mm sounds interesting. And, as you note, jolly pricy.

Working with Pentax film SLRs and a Sigma 28/80 zoom (which I've used
for years on a series of Pentaxes) I found that when I was working over
a subject, altering focal length for picture, not to a preconceived
value, I mostly ended up at around 35mm. This is equivalent to the
sub-30mm range for a CCD.

Of course this has to do with the way I take pictures, and the kind of
pictures I take. But I reckon the basic fixed lens kit I'd go for would
be that 30mm as a basic lens, a wider lens for fun and one fast 60 or
70mm lens for night faces.
