Imac DV400 woes

I'll start this off with saying I know next to nothing about macs, now to
the problem.

I have been given this mac to fix after someone decided to install OSX10.2
(Panther ?)
on it without upadating the firmware and then went on to clear the Pram (?)
and it wouldn't boot at all.

After much reading up I have fixed it and installed 0S 9.1 and OSX but the
moniter does 800x600 alright, but 1024x768 will sometimes work but more
often than not I end up with the screen going wavy as if it is not in sync,
the external Vga output works ok at all resolutions.

Has anyone any ideas on how to fix this please
