Word routinely does obscene things, but it does seem that the
responsibility for printing stuff is handed back to Apple fairly
wholeheartedly.

There *is* an preference setting in Word to use printer metrics for
fonts, and all the PPDs have to say on the subject is which fonts are
resident in each printer. I'd bet that Word asks CUPS to ask the
printer to hand over its width tables and hands it on to Word.

In Steve's case we have to think of a mechanism for Word to
conveniently forget about a huge raft of of his fonts alphabetically,
whether or not they were likely to be printer resident.

Since Word has a well deserved reputation for getting upset over the
slightest font irregularity, and since Steve fixed it by fixing the
font caches, we can probably let the PPDs off with a warning.

This time!
heh!
