[D50 issues]

But surely the whole point of these cameras is not to use auto and to
experiment? Or am I missing something? :-)

Yes and no. The D50 is aimed at two markets: lazy folk like me who want
an intelligent dSLR camera that produces good quality pictures under most circumstances ("point and shoot"), and more experimental/creative
folk who have the time and interest to fiddle with all sorts of settings
and to manipulate the raw images to get the most out of their shots. If
experimentation is important for you then the D50 may not necessarily be
the best choice, although it does allow you to set all sorts of things
manually.

I should say, if it wasn't already obvious, that I am a total beginner
really, and especially with DSLR. I just need to start somewhere.

I fully agree with Simon, the D50 is an excellent camera for beginners. Produces great shots when using the various auto program modes allowing you to concentrate fully on your subject, but as you go along and want to be more and more in control yourself then the D50 will let you do that. And with the recent price cuts it's become even more attractive, especially for dSLR beginners. I entered the world of digital photography three years ago with a very easy to use 3.1MP Kodak Easyshare DX3900 [1], complete with docking station which worked flawlessly with the Mac, but I quickly discovered that the camera was too limiting although the pictures were fine. I have no doubt that the D50 will last me at least twice as long, although it won't beat my old Olympus OM2 SLR bought in the mid-70's and which I've used for over 30 years...

[1] anyone interested? I don't have a need for it any more.
