Yes and Apple are promoting their computers as Java development
platforms. If they were a significant player Sun would probably be
backing them too.

True. They are no different to many other companies in this respect.

This thread has got me rethinking my views to a certain extent. I can
appreciate that asking someone to use the latest OS to use the latest
JDK can be justified. However, I still feel that such tactics will push
more developers towards linux and windows for development where they
aren't burdened with the same problem and have much more community
support, and as long as that continues 3rd party Java support for OS X
will remain very limited.
