....and, rightly or wrongly, MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger is perceived by
many as being the 'official' Windows messaging client. For that reason
alone, a lot of people will use nothing else.

Just as a bit of totally ad-hoc research, I asked a few of my contacts about
this over the weekend - the consensus was they use MSN/Windows Messenger
because "everyone else does". Sounds to me like a textbook example of the
critical mass effect

I strongly suspect that Skype will wipe out many/most IM clients over the
next 12 months, especially in the transatlantic market. Each day I'm
getting one or two contacts moving across...
