Mail and new servers locally?

Ok, I'm now off to Eclipse for broadband, and I've got my web server
working nicely.
I plan to use Gmail for my Email, as I'm on the one month contract I'm
now preparing for ISP changes, should Eclipse prove to be a bad move
(which I suspect it won't).
I currently use the German new server, and occasionally log into my own
ISP's news server for dedicated groups.
Now I have unlimited download limits, and plenty of spare HD space, is
it worth considering setting up a local mail and new server on my Mac?
If so, can I choose to only download news groups I subscribe too? And in
general, is this easy enough to do to make the effort worthwhile?
As much as I have experience of computers, I've never actually had to
deal with server side stuff much before.
