RTFM helps a bit :-)

Bottom of the window of the message list for a groups, tabe that says
'Bodies and Headers', click on the Extra Options button, and select the
sort order in there.

Because paned windows are a pain ;-)
Sorry, couldn't resist. Probably because MacSOUP was written back when
paned views were not even thought of. It still isn't a true Aqua app you
know.

Huh?
Hit the keypad-1 key, and you should see all unread posts (bottom left
of group list window).

I never use that, I use Command-W. It's not a 'delete' button either,
it's a 'Close Window' button. In most apps if you try to close a window
with unsaved changes it will normally prompt to save/discard/cancel.
MacSOUP simply saves it automatically to the outbox.
You can still access the article for editing or deleting later on.
Why do *I* use it. Well, it simply works, most of the alternative
newsreaders that I've tried normally crash or fall down at some point.
Then there's the graphical thread display, no other reader comes close
to that. It's fast, even on my G5 with 2Mb broadband, it still
outperforms all other readers for downloading complete articles - by a
large margin.
If I was to choose an alternative right now, it would probably be Pan.
