Have you tried booting a modern PC into DOS (on the Hard Drive
not from a floppy)recently? It's pretty fast - although still not
instant - takes about 8-10 seconds on my 2GHz XP box. (Actually
I must try my iBook into single user command prompt mode. It
used to be 65s when new to get into OS X proper, last time I
timed it it had slowed to 3 minutes!)

The problem is all the drivers (graphics cards, networking etc)
and services (apache, ftpd, sendmail, cups, smb) that have to
get loaded nowadays. As machines get more powerful our ability
to pile more junk onto them increases to match!

My iPod boots in less than a minute tho'... :-)
