Okay, I'm getting seriously pissed off with Tiger.

1. Mail 2 is nothing like as good as Mail 1. Pretty much everyone agrees, I think.

2. Fast User Switching does weird things under Tiger. The swivelling-cube doesn't work properly (at least not on my G5 iMac: it's fine on the G4).

3. Fast User Switching breaks the system sound in an unpredictable way. And it breaks Mail sounds in a totally predictable way (ie they stop working when you Fast User Switch).

4. When the screen saver blacks out the screen, it comes back with crap written all over it (looks like a hex dump) and takes a second or so to straighten out.

5. Fsking farking Spotlight, for fcuk's sake, just *doesn't* do the one thing it's supposed to. I've just spent twenty minutes looking for a file which I *knew* was on my disk: I could open the freaking thing from the "Open Recent" menu. But could I find it using Spotlight? Eventually found it by trawling through all the directories. Manually.

In return, what does Tiger give me? Widgets. Yes, I find them useful. No, they're not enough of a trade-off for all the hassle Tiger is causing.

So how easy is it to go back to Panther? As far as I can see, fairly easy except for Mail. I need to access all the mail I've sent and received over the past couple of months, but I suspect Tiger has put them into a new format which Panther can't access. Maybe by juggling an IMAP account it might be possible to get them back to the old format? Maybe I'll have calmed down in a day or two? Maybe.

I like Mail v2 a lot better, but Spotlight is a bit hit and miss at times. It makes for a good app launcher though ;)
