I think the last 100 tub I got from Maplins was £20. No coasters so far.
The disks are marked Hi-Space DVD-R general. No-name plastic wrapped
tub.
Heh! I'm not using them that fast. I'm doing more and more backups to
el-cheapo Firewire disks.
Thread merge warning:
I have a pair of Wiebe-tech combo dock firewire things that were not
all that cheap, but they are good. You can plug any old drive onto to
the end of one without worrying too much about a case.
DVD-Rs are 5p/GB and an hour or more to write and verify a lousy 4GB
Bare hard drives are 20p/GB and totally painless. You can back up 40GB
in half an hour.
The combination of the two methods is pretty good. Stage the backups to
external firewire using alternate disks. Prepare offsite backups to
DVD-R from the firewire disks without interfering too much with
production. That way I have at least two independent backups on local
spinning storage, and a backup history off site in case the joint burns
down or the burglars get lucky. Speaking of burglars, I write the DVDs
as encrypted sparse images, so I don't have to worry about the offsite
disks falling into the wrong hands.
When I look at the cupboards full of DAT backup tapes going back about
10 years and averaging £1.50/GB in lumps of 2 GB, I gotta say it is
progress.
