You throw away resolution doing that. Twice.
Cheapy cameras shoot 16:9 by remapping the CCD, switching off 25% of it
in two strips top and bottom. 16:9 is still 720 pixels * 576 pixels.
Those pixels have been sat on by an elephant. They are gathered from a
smaller bit of the CCD, making it and the lens work harder. With the
cheap 'glass' in sub £1000 camcorders, that is not a great idea.
Cropping to 4:3 afterward throws away 25% of the pixels you captured,
and remanufactures pixels from the neighbours.
It is better to keep the aspect ratio camera native. If you plan to
export 16:9 get a Canon XL2 or similar. They have three 16:9 CCD
arrays, big enough to afford not using the sides when shooting 4:3.
At their prices, I'll be waiting for an affordable 720p camera to
appear.
