Many thanks. Trying your first suggestion (and I'm a Unix novice so proceeded with Pogue's OSX Missing Manual at my side) I typed lp then dragged the .ps file icon into the Terminal window. This sent the file to the LaserJet which gave every impression of being about to print but then stopped. Could this be due to the fact there are fonts in the publication which are not in the printer or the OSX Mac?
Probably not fonts - in my experience with multiple makes of printer, when they can't find a font they either substitute (nasty) or leave it blank (useless). I've got a postscript 'job' here which just loads a bundle of fonts into one of my printers, used before sending some files.
It may however be that your printer doesn't actually interpret postscript - what model is it? I've got a LaserJet 4M Plus which does a bootiful job of postscript printing, and a Laserjet 5L which doesn't understand PS at all.
