Mac Mini external boot disk

Try as I might, I can't create an external boot disk for the Mini for backup purposes.
I have an external 20gig disk in a Firewire enclosure. I erased and reformatted in MacOS Extended Journaled. Did a backup with Silberkeeper, which actually asked if it was to be a bootable disk etc. Un-ticked the Ignore Permission thingy and applied the changes.
When I hold down the key labelled alt on the Apple keyboard when I boot, up comes the purple screen with the boot disks available, but it only shows the Macintosh HD. Repeated the backup fresh, but with PsyncX this time, but still the same.
Any advice?
Many thanks,
Graham W .
