FWIW, I've fixed a Compaq Presario and found that any attempts to resolder
the socket on resulted in the tracks on the board lifting. Eventually I was
able to identify the correct point at which the tracks "resurfaced" (i.e.
what the +/- connectors were directly connected to) and used some solid core
wire to directly solder to them. I then firmly araldited the socket to the
motherboard and so far, so good. Once it does go again I'm hosed ;-).
Also, don't forget that with a suitable adapter, a laptop drive can be
connected to a desktop machine if you need to get data off.
Regular backups! If you have a desktop with a large hard drive, look-up
"robocopy" on the Microsoft website and copy the entire damn disk. Beats
fiddling around and deciding what to copy.
