Dropped laptop - just 2 ft onto carpet whilst in carry-case, but won't
power
up. I notice that the power jack is now very slack in it's socket
almost
slack enough to fall out under gravity. Is this likely to be a simple
repair I can do myself?
How long is a piece of string please?
In other words, 'what laptop it is' might help those who care enough to
'diagnose' your issue and suggest options open to you.
Its a Compaq Presario 2521EA
You might find the service manual useful

screen on my laptop - after my young son managed to get into our bedroom,
open it up and (I presume) stand on the screen while I was late home from
work tonight?? :-(
Spent the last 2 hours scouring through the hoards of boxfiles & drawers,
looking for the receipt and extended/accidental warranty details!!
Nasty,
If you can't get it repaired on insurance or similar you may well find it's
not really economical to replace the screen. When our screen went on a 3yo
HP, it would have cost over £400 for a replacement screen unit. Fortunately,
the problem was (self) diagnosed as 'most likely the FL inverter'. A local
repair shop quoted £150 for a repair, but HP sold the part for about £50 and
I was able to repair it myself (using the HP service manual for 75% of the
repair and 'winging it' for the last bits).
If you've got the service manual it's not that hard to take it apart. Read
it through and write down the order of dissembly before you start (you only
need to get the screen unit separated) and be careful to keep track of which
screws came from where.
You can of course, still plug in an external screen and use it as a
semi-desktop.
