Nel I find this quite bazzaar as you have a relavtivly new laptop and if
there is a slot underneath the keyboard then it would generally be in
accessable to a user with average capabilities and in most normal
circumstances the slot accessed from underneath is the one thats left
unpopulated so as the user can upgrade. I would assume that you bought
this laptop from new? and without seeing a schematic i cant say for sure
but your options are return the laptop to where you bought it and ask
them to insert the extra memory, or phone seimens tech support up and ask
them to advise, One last thing is your brothers laptop the same model as
yours?, whatever though I would definatly remove the memory from his
machine and keep it anyway

*Update*
I had tried the Fujitsu Siemens website not long after I bought the
laptop, and there was nothing relating to my model. Since posting my
original message I tried again on the off-chance and they have now updated
it and have instructions on how to add the extra memory.

There is indeed a slot under the keyboard which can be accessed by 1)
removing battery 2) removing keyboard screw 3) unclipping keyboard using
specialised tool (although I'm sure I can improvise there!) 4) removing
cover to reveal slot.

Why they couldn't have placed my current 512MB in there though, I have no
idea!

not sure why either as that would be the standard procedure as upgrading
memory should/is a end user replacement. Is it possible that it wasn't brand
new???
