is it possible to get some sort of tv out card, either pcmcia or
usb, so I can watch videos from my laptop on my tv?
I have an old compaq presario 1200 with only a monitor out on the
back.
Yes, several companies manufacture such devices. Trust being one
company. Have a look at Maplins or Amazon for starters. Expect to pay
between £20-40
If you are bold it may be possible to connect from your VGA port on the
laptop to an RGB enabled SCART socket on the TV and this will give you the
best picture quality possible short of going the DVI/HDMI route, which I
doubt is an option for you. I had my Media Center PC connected to my 32" CRT
TV this way for the better part of two years until I bought an LCD TV and
went digital. You will need a custom cable to achieve this and possibly some
software called Powerstrip. I had my cable constructed for me by
http://www.keene.co.uk/. Details of the cable construction can be found
here - http://www.idiots.org.uk/vga_rgb_scart/.
If you have a flat panel TV then you may well have a VGA input anyway, which
would keep things much simpler and improve quality significantly compared to
s-video or comosite connection methods.
