The modem is at desk height, and the walls are only 6" thick
(brick/plaster).
It did make a big difference when I moved my wireless laptop into the next
room to the modem, as suggested by Woody.
I was "sucked" into the modem description where ....you can get signal up to
tens of yards!!!

Costantly I am getting low signal strength on my laptop when surfing.
My laptop is in my lounge with the desktop/modem is in study ...2 rooms
(bungalow).
No joy with BT yet.

How far off the ground is the wireless thingy? Higher up usually means
less furniture in the way of the signal. If the walls are substantial
then they will attenuate the signal strongly even if you are within a few
yards.
