Hold back....I have simply left the Tecra H/D out & reboot into bios
via F12 hit....will come backto group when I have more to tell you.
I will fdisk/reformat Tecra drive in my desktop again, without
putting windows etc. on.
Even got the Toshiba logo...and into bios with F2 key.

Please see my postings from 19/7/06, to see the good earlier
suggestions/replies on this subject.
My latest move was to fdisk/format the tecra H/D which I did via my
desktop PC.
What I was able to load on tecra H/D after formatting (enable large
disc capaity) was "Command com" , and Windows dir containing files
copied from Win98 CD...which resulted in
dir..."C:\Windows\Options\Cabs".
I was unable to access the existing "setup.exe" in \\cabs after
formatting....no error text either.
On fitting formatted H/D back into Tecra I got the Toshiba logo (in
red) with the words "press F2 to enter start menu".
I was unable to proceed any further as no respnce with F2. After
unplugging/replugging mains lead I no longer have that Toshiba Logo
above, so I am back to square one again...looking more like
trashing it now but I just hope something will come from this N/G
!still as I feel it is not far off "coming back to life" LOL.
Refresh.....
Can engage floppy... only when starting with F12, tried several
bios
versions on floppies and boot disk...no response.
I am able to access CD tray but not reacting other than the tray
light flashing and a whirring noise.
Battery removed still.
I am willing to try "things" if any more ideas come along.

Terry,

Why not remove the partition and not re-partition and format. Leave
the HDD completely blank and try again. Have you got another 9.5mm
HDD you could try in the laptop?

Lee.
A blank HD won't boot. It needs the system files to boot as C:.

Terry,

Apologies I meant to say remove the partition and see if the red Toshiba
writing appears on boot-up, with the HDD installed. I could not remember
if you have the recovery CD for the laptop? What operating system are
you trying to put on the laptop? Try formating the the HDD with a FAT32
partition, by downing loading a Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com.
Then try transferring the system files to the C: drive using the sys c:\
command. Then reboot the laptop without the boot disk in the drive, if
you get a C:\ prompt the laptop is booting from the HDD. You can then
attempt to re-install the chosen OS, I can tell you how to do this if
required, just as long as you have the license and media.

Lee.

Terry,

Also if you have a Win98SE CD, then this should be bootable, and you
will be able to FDISK and format 'fat32' the drive with this CD in the
Tosh laptop. Just hold down the 'C' key when powering on the T8100, with
the Win98SE CD in the laptop.

Lee.
