Top tip: If you spill a can of Coke over your 5 year old PIII 700MHz Acer
laptop, it's unlikely to survive....
Having played multiple rounds of 'refuse their replacement offer' [1] with
Dixons Insurance Services (who 'More Than' outsource to), I've now been
offered a laptop whose monetary value I'm willing to accept - around
750GBP ex-VAT. I have to choose something from the PC World Business
offerings - www.pcwb.com.
Wanting a sub-2kg laptop my choice appears to be a Turion 64 MT-34 1.8, a
Core Solo T1300 1.66 or a Pentium M740 1.73.
Everything else being equal [2], which would you choose and why?
TIA.
[1] Their opening offer was obviously the cheapest Acer they could find -
349 quid.
[2] Wish it were - XGA/WXGA, 4200rpm/5400rpm, 12.1"/14.1" - decision,
decisions...
Turion 64 is a good alternative and CPU upgradable and 64 bit capable.
I have one (1.6) and performance is good. Unfortunately compaq build quality
on mine is poor.
I also have a Dell Pentium M 1.7 for work and it's pretty rock solid.
As for performance differences..... Hard to tell to be honest, both are 3+
hrs on battery, Pentium M seems to run cooler but a little slower for
"normal" use.
Normal use for us is Web, Games, Work, Music & video.
I'd personally take the best brand irrespective of CPU but avoid recent
Compaq machines, mine does work fine but feet have fallen off, trackpad is
wearing and pcmcia slot has now gone tits up. Sounds like warranty time for
me as well!
