I have a Dell Latitude CPi D266XT whose CPU is playing up. I ran
Memtest86+ for about half an hour, and it halted with a General
Protection Fault.
Should I open it up and increase the amount of thermal paste
surrounding the CPU core, or would it be better to fit a new CPU?
This is probably caused by one of two things, both "features" of the CP
family.
Fix 1: press with palm of hand on O/P area of keyboard with power off
and battery out. The CPU can become unseated on earlier models and
this pushes it back. Often this is a semi-permanent fix.
Fix 2: If this *doesn't* do the job, then open it up and check the
heatshield/heatsink screws are tight, as these work loose. This is
located top right: start disassembly with the keyboard (5 screws on
base, lifts/prises out) and then start on the casing...
