Thanks for your comments.
I recall recording outdoor sounds as a boy, with a Phillips reel to reel
and
the omni-directional moving coil (IIRC) microphone that came with it. It
was
a mains machine so I couldn't do much more than stick the mic out the
window
but I was happy with the results at the time. What I'd have given for a
mini
disc recorder then - or a computer - or a digital camera . . .
I did the same with a little Philips cassette recorder.
I had one of those as well - mine was a N2205. It was OK but didn't give as
good results as the reel to reel - which had a faster tape speed - something
like 3 1/2 or 3 1/4 inches per second. The reel to reel tapes have kept
their quality over the years much much better than the cassettes as well.
One thing to bear in mind is that the recording quality of those little
Philips machines was surprisingly good and far better than any modern
cheap mp3 recorder. Strange as it may seem, given the progress in
technology over the years, you won't find anything better than that
Philips for less than a couple of hundred quid.
Not even a mini disc recorder??
