I'd like to try using my Thinkpad T23 for recording birdsound and was

Wouldn't a mini-disc recorder and mic be a lot more suitable and portable?
Um quite possibly. I have no experience of these, hence hadn't really
thought of it. I was hoping for a low cost solution using the recording
device I already have - ie my laptop. I wonder how a mini-disc recorder
would compare with a flash memory type of device like the Olympus DM-20, -
which sounds quite good but also a bit more than I'd like to spend.
The BBC has a page with what looks like excellent advice
