I am a final year design student wanting to buy a laptop.

I have £600 and asked for recommendations.

But nobody has given me any guidance.

????????????????????

belated reply

FWIW i just bought a Tosh Sat Pro L20 for a teenager with Pent M, 512M, and
DVD writer.

512M since you need this unless you want XP programs swapping to disk
P-M to get relatively long battery life (3 1/2 hours or so)
the screen is 4:3 rather than widescreen - i prefer that for more usable
screen space, but YMMV. It is still only 750 x 1000 though (if you need
hires then you are going to need lots more money, or use an external screen,
or both)

it was around £570 from www.MorganComputers.co.uk , but www.buytoshiba.co.uk
was the last one i bought from a couple of months back.

your spec would need more memory, and maybe a better display adaptor - no
idea what that app mix in the other post needs........

If battery life isnt so important, then you can save £50 to £100 with the
lower spec models

service and support are the key issues for laptops - and toshiba are the
only company that have been reasonably good and reasonably consistent for me
over the years.

So - my family has 3 or 4 toshiba laptops which are "current spec" and
several older ones which are hand me downs.
i gave up on no name laptops after loads of hassle of drivers and spares.
Gave up on Dell after a nightmare with a couple of model types.
Gave up on HP (not Compaq) when i found out the hardware is classified as
"business" or home, and they dont support all operating systems on both
got scared away from several other makes on stories of poor support.

After all - if we dont hold grudges about when companies let us down,
complain and tell others about the problems - then where is the incentive
for them to get better?

Conversely - if you dont reward the good ones by spending money with them
and recommending them when you can will they still be there when you want
support?
