The operating system referred to could be the 3 msdos files usually
located in the root folder of C:\, or it could be the Win XP boot
files. Have you checked the 4 or more files in run-sysedit for
discrepancies or missing lines? If you have prepared a boot rescue
floppy disk for the laptop, compare these files on the boot disk with
the ones in the root folder of C:\ to see if they have become
corrupted.

There is however instances where having a "large" number of files in the root folder leads to MFT fragmentation that could lead to an "NTLDR is missing" error message when you boot the computer so it is not a good idea to store too many files in the root folder. ... Both new hard drives pass the Seagate DOS hard drive short and long test, ... We'll of course assume that your HDDs are ...
