Check on the HDD manufacturer's website as the old drive may
still be under guarantee, in which case they may supply you with
a new or service exchange reconditioned drive for the trouble
and cost of sending the old one back. Worth a few minutes to
check, I'd say.

Definitely worth checking. However, the response may be that warranty responsibility lies with the OEM = Toshiba! Hence its also worth checking with the OEM - Toshiba's PC division.

I checked but unfortunately, even if the HDD was covered separately to the laptop (one year), the warranty would've been for two years. Spoke to a few people at Tosh and they all doubted the HDD would be covered separately anyway.

I'm back on my laptop now with a proper newsreader thank god. I fitted the Western Digital Scorpio (WD600VE) within seconds of its arrival, and the Tosh restore discs reinstalled Windows XP Pro fine. The new HDD's warranty expires on 23 Dec 2008. Oh and it's super-silent. I thought the Tosh drive was quiet, but you could still hear a gentle clicking in a really quiet room. If I press my ear against the laptop now, I can't hear this HDD at all.

I'm looking for a (M10) keyboard now. The present one developed an earthing problem last year, and although I 'bodge fixed' it with a bit of insulation tape (underneath so unseen), I'd like to just replace it...preferably with a brand new one. £63+VAT seems a bit steep though. (I know, I know, I'm being unrealistic.)

Cheers
