Who would be the cheapest supplier for Toshiba Satellite Pro M10
parts?
My HDD is making the clicking noise of death so I've quickly
backed
everything up and I'm about to turn it off for good.

And how easy is it to replace a HDD in this particular laptop?
I've removed the keyboard previously and replaced the memory,
but that's as far as it goes. I built my own desktop PC some
years ago, but obviously, the chassis was more user friendly and
only a Fisher Price level of intuition was required.

From the spec ***, the current hard disk is a standard 2.5"
notebook type:

60.0 billion bytes, 4200 RPM, 9.5mm height, Enhanced IDE, ATA-5,
2.5". Service removable by 2 screws

"Service removable by two screws" probably means it is removable
without disassembling the system, usually a panel on the underside
or an edge of the PC. The disk will be mounted inside a mfr-
specific carrier, so you'll need to work out how to disassemble
that to get at the drive itself.

Laptop 2.5" drives are available from many sources and you don't
need to stick to the Toshiba brand. Make sure you get the height
right. There are 7200rpm drives on sale, so shop around.

Thanks for that. It's a relief to find I'm not limited to Toshiba
branded parts. I'll take a look through some online stores now and
check the underneath of the unit when I get home. Some other concerns
I have:

i) If I replace the HDD, will I still be able to use Toshiba's system
restore discs to 'reinstall' Windows XP Pro? (I understand many OEM
restore dics won't reinstall Windows if the hardware configuration
changes?)

ii) The present HDD appears to work fine except for the occasional
clicking, during which time the OS intermittently freezes. I've
noticed that if I lift the laptop and knock it against the desk surface
(not too hard, obviously), that's enough to eliminate the clicking, and
get everything working again....until next time. Does that sound like
textbook HDD failure? I've done a memtest memory check and there were
no errors. When I try to run Scandisk, eventually the clicking will
re-appear and I get a BSOD.
