Some older laptops require a battery to be inserted even when using the
mains.
Try completely discharging the battery and charging it up again a
couple of times.
Leave the battery charging overnight. If the laptop suffers the same
fate again then the battery is definitely faulty.
Whilst connected to the mains does any LEDs come on and flash. They
usually do, indicating the battery is charging up. If the LEDs come on
etc, then the AC adapter might not be faulty.
Get a new battery and charge it completely and try booting up the
laptop. If it still does the same thing plug the AC adapter in and run
it off the mains. If this allows you to boot up, then it simply was a
combination of faulty battery and power save settings.
